Chico police work to end standoff after shelter employee allegedly struck with bamboo

UPDATE AS OF 5:50PM

CHICO, Calif. - A woman was taken into custody following an hours-long standoff at a transitional housing home on Salem Street by West 19th and 20th Street.

Action News Now spoke on the phone with the man who was assaulted, James Hickman, a former house manager for the home, which is transitional housing for the Torres Shelter.

He said the incident started with the woman running everyone out of the home and barricading herself inside. Hickman says a window was left open, and he climbed through it in an attempt to speak with her but when she saw him, she hit him with a bamboo pole.

Hickman says he then got out through the back door and was taken to Enloe Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. He said he had a bruise and was swollen where the cut was, but the bleeding had stopped.

As of 6pm Salem has been reopened.
